Falls Park -- Sioux Falls, SD

Since we had some free time between baseball games at the tournament, we decided to take Brianna to Falls Park and look around. Falls Park is located just north of downtown Sioux Falls. The history of Sioux Falls revolves around the cascades of the Big Sioux River . The falls were created about 14,000 years ago during the last ice age. In pioneer days, the Falls were tapped for water power to run the Queen Bee Mill, built in 1887. The foundation of the mill is still visible, as well as a hydroelectric plant built in 1908. Today, the park covers 42 acres. Each second, an average of 7,400 gallons of water drop 100 feet over the course of the falls. With all the recent rains the area has gotten, the Falls was an exceptional sight to behold!! This is definitely a spot worth checking out when you have some free time in Sioux Falls... and the best part is that it is FREE!!!

Baseball, Fathers, and A Birthday

What a weekend!! We crammed in three trips to Sioux Falls for a baseball tournament Friday thru Sunday, and also managed to celebrate Father's Day and my mom's 60th birthday along the way!!!

Zach had a wooden bat tournament in Sioux Falls this past weekend. Instead of staying the whole weekend in Sioux Falls, we thought we would just drive back and forth each day. It is only a little over an hour away... and Mom was coming to Sioux City for the weekend and we wanted to be able to spend some time with her, too! As it turns out, Zach's first game was on Friday night at 8pm. The team rode a school bus up there and the bus driver took a route that took longer than the coach thought it would to get to the ballpark. They barely had time to get their uniforms on before the start of the game, let alone warm up on the field and do a little hitting with the wooden bats that they aren't used to using... East ended up losing the game to an Omaha team (Papillion-LaVista) that night and we got back to Sioux City around midnight. The next game was scheduled for 2:30 pm on Saturday afternoon... this time the bus left with plenty of time to get to the ballpark!! We headed up around noon after taking Brianna over to my sister's house to see Grandma for about an hour. East did a great job, winning this game against a Sioux Falls team (Brandon Valley). Their next game was at 7pm that night. Since there was three hours to kill before the next game, the East coach took the players to CiCi's... a pizza/salad bar buffet. We decided to take Brianna to the Falls Park located north of the downtown area of Sioux Falls. (I will post about that in my next post!) Upon returning to the ballpark, East played another awesome game and won against Sioux Falls East! We found out that the next game was going to be on Sunday at 1pm... so we headed back to Sioux City and got home about 11pm. I called my sister because we had been trying to figure out way to get us all together to celebrate Mom's birthday and have cake... we decided to do a breakfast thing, since we had to head back up to Sioux Falls for Zach's 1pm game that afternoon!!

Everyone in our house got up early to go over to my sister's house for my mom's "birthday party"/breakfast!! I ran to Casey's and got a breakfast pizza to go with the cake we were having for breakfast!! It was really nice, because even Zach got to spend about an hour helping Mom celebrate her birthday before he had to run and catch the bus back up to Sioux Falls. CJ, Brianna and I stayed a little longer, since we didn't need to get there til the start of the game. Sioux City East played Mitchell, SD for the final game and WON!!!! I believe they ended up in 5th place out of 16 teams from the tri-state area... Great job, Black Raiders!!!... Happy Birthday, Mom!!... and Happy Father's Day, CJ and all the other fathers out there!!!

Seizure #5...

As if our night wasn't bad enough already... Brianna has to top it off with another one of her seizure episodes... don't know if the evening's events might have been some sort of "trigger" for it or what -- that will be a question for the doctor when we see him in September...

It's almost always the same scenario... Brianna had gone to bed and hadn't been asleep long. I was still up watching TV and she came walking out with her hand over her mouth and nose. I asked her what was wrong, but she didn't answer me, so I followed her into the bathroom. She was standing over the toilet and next thing I knew, she started convulsing. I grabbed her and held her up, but I don't think these convulsions were that strong that she would have fallen down... still, I wasn't going to take any chances. After about 10-15 seconds, she stopped convulsing. She was immediately aware of what happened and said that she was sleeping and thought she was going to be sick and throw up. She got up to go into the bathroom and felt like she had vomit in her mouth, so she had her hand up over her mouth. She doesn't remember the actual convulsions, but she had the same "after effects" as before... drooling, paralysis of one side of her mouth that lasts about 5 minutes afterwards... This is about the only time that I find myself wishing that Brianna was 15 or 16 years old already and has grown out of this... It is so frustrating that there are no answers!!

Baseball Games Can Be Scary...

The night started out like any other of our summer evenings... hurry up and get home after work so we can head out to a ball game!! On this particular evening, Zach was playing a double-header against another local high school team -- North High. During the 2nd game, Zach came up to bat and hit the ball fast and hard... right into the pitcher!! The next thing we saw, the pitcher just dropped to the mound and lay completely still for a good ten seconds or more. By the time people were rushing out to check on him, he was trying to get on his knees. Zach's coach called 911 because the kid was having trouble breathing and swallowing. He did manage to tell the coaches and trainers that the ball hit him in his collarbone, then bounced up and hit his neck. The pitcher's father also ran out to the field to see about his son, only to collapse on the field himself, so another 911 call was placed. We ended up with three cop cars, two firetrucks, and two ambulances arriving on the scene. The paramedics determined that the baseball must have struck the adam's apple and partially lodged it into his airway... once they squeezed his neck, the adam's apple moved back out and he was able to breathe and swallow better. Turns out the father that collapsed has a history of cardiac arrest... they think his blood pressure probably spiked when his son got hurt. The paramedics also noticed that his pulse was thready, so they wanted to take him to a hospital. Both the pitcher and his father went to the hospital that night. And throughout all of this, Zach just felt TERRIBLE... it was really hard for both teams to continue the game after this incident. I am just so thankful for some of the parents from the opposing team that came up to Zach after the game to let him know that "it was OK", that "these things happen", "baseball can be dangerous", etc. etc." The best part was the next day at Zach's practice... his coaches let him know that both father and son were OK and recovering fine...

Okoboji 2010

It is that time for our annual trip up to Okoboji... only one change was made this year. We traded Zach in for a younger girl!!! LOL

Due to Zach's busy summer schedule and also having a basketball camp the same week that we were going to be in Okoboji, Zach decided to stay home so he wouldn't miss out on all these things. This was a big step for both Zach and us (his parents!) to leave him home ALONE for a whole week!! Needless to say, he followed the rules and earned himself a higher notch on our trust level!! It probably helped that all the neighbors and friends were "looking out" for him and his schedule was so busy that he didn't have time to find any trouble!!

Since Zach wasn't going with us, we let Brianna bring her best friend, Madi! It worked out really great - the girls got along great all week, and the bonus was that I actually got a little free time to myself since Brianna had someone to entertain her!! They spent the week going to the movie theater on the resort, shopping in the souvenir shops, and lots of swimming!! We also spent a day at Arnold's Park towards the end of the week! This is always a great time for us up there and it always seems so short... before we know it, it is time to come back home. (Actually, this time we really did have to cut it short -- we came back two days early because Brianna really wanted to go camping with her Girl Scout troop on that Friday night!) I didn't get the camera out much while we were there, but I am posting some pics from Arnold's Park...

School's Out!

The kids got out of school on Friday, May 29th!! Look out summer, here they come!! Of course, not sure if Zach will get to enjoy much of it... he has a full plate. Every day consists of weight lifting for football at 7am... then basketball practice/workouts at 8:45am... followed by baseball practice at 11am.... there are even going to be some weeks where he has a sports "camp" in the afternoons, and we can't forget about the baseball games in the evenings!!

Back to the school note... both kids brought home awesome report cards and will be advancing to their next levels... 11th grade for Zach and 5th grade for Brianna!!! GREAT JOB KIDDOS!!! Keep up the awesome work!!!

History Project Reception/Ceremony

Brianna completed a 4th grade Sioux City History Project back at the beginning of the year. This is a required project for every 4th grader in Sioux City. Once the projects are completed, they are judged by people from the Sioux City Public Museum. Out of the 800+ projects around the city, 91 of them were selected to be displayed in the Public Museum! Brianna was one of them!!

These selected projects were on display for two months. On the final day, a reception/ceremony was held and each participant was awarded with a Certificate of Achievement from Tom Padgett, the mayor of Sioux City. Here is a picture of Brianna getting her award:

Mother's Day 2010

Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers out there!!! We had a great Mother's Day weekend... my niece, Avery, was baptized... and we also spent the weekend in Laurens with Mom!!! We had a nice Sunday dinner and I had Sydney and Brianna help me clean the kitchen and dishes so Grandma could relax!! I got cards and letters that Brianna made at school for me (those are the best!!) and I also got a card from CJ and the kids, with the "promise" to get me flowers and plants. I want to plant flowers and get some color going in our yard, so this is my gift! Now I just need to find the time to go pick out what I want!!! Hopefully soon!...

Avery's Baptism

My niece, Avery, was baptized on Mother's Day weekend!! My sister had her baptized back in our church in Laurens, to make it easier for the godparents and other family members to attend. Avery's godparents were her great-aunt Barb and great-uncle Rich. The baptism ceremony was held just before the Saturday evening mass at church. Afterwards, we went back to mom's house for supper, gifts, and cake! God Bless Avery!!

Congratulations Kayla and Toby!!

Last weekend, we went home and attended the wedding reception of our friends, Toby and Kayla!! Both have been friends of the family for as long as we can remember!! It is so nice to see them finally get married!!! Congrats and best wishes to both of you!!! Love ya!!

The reception was great on many levels!! My brother, Derek, was able to make it home to attend, which was nice because we haven't seen him since Thanksgiving!! It was also nice to see many friends that we haven't seen in a while and get "caught up" with each other's lives!!

The DJ for that dance also had karaoke!! Brianna and all the other kids LOVED this!!! Whenever it was open for karaoke, you could be sure that all the kids were over there belting out tunes!! It was a great way to keep them entertained!!! Just wish I had my camera with me and gotten some pictures...

Baseball Season Is Under Way

Spring is here... and that means baseball!! Zach started his baseball season the weekend after Easter by playing Spring Baseball. He had a double-header every Sunday afternoon, playing other area schools. Zach did really well playing many different positions, such as 1st base, 3rd base, shortstop, and right field. He even got a home run during one of the games! Luckily, it was the one game his grandma (my mom!) got to see!!!

Now, he has just wrapped up baseball try-outs and found out he made the JV team! Good job, Zach!! I just hope he gets to play... during try-outs, he was noticing some "soreness" in his elbow and his coach recommends getting an x-ray... hopefully it is nothing serious. We will find out soon, as he has an appointment next week.

Brianna has decided she does not want to play softball this season... not sure of her reasoning behind this, but we were talking about signing her up for fast-pitch instead of slow-pitch this year... not sure if that scared her off. We will let her choose which one she wants next season!

R.I.P. Calvin Brown

We received the call from CJ's sister Easter morning... saying that his cousin, Calvin, had just passed away of an apparent heart attack at 46 years old... such sad news...

Calvin was a great guy -- he always had a kind word for everyone he met, and was always willing to help you if you needed it. Calvin, we will miss you A LOT... but we will never forget you!!

Easter 2010

Since I had to work the Saturday before Easter, we decided not to go anywhere for Easter Sunday. Instead, Mom came to SC and Matt and Jenny decided to have Easter dinner over at their house and have everyone over. Derek was not able to attend since he was clear over in Ames, but he was missed!! (Love you, Derek... we will see you soon!!)

Dinner was great and then Matt and CJ took all the kids outside to play baseball since it was such a gorgeous day! When Mom decided to head back to LZ, we also decided to head home since we had noticed that Zach's car had a flat tire that morning. Hopefully there is somewhere to get it fixed on an Easter Sunday???!!

A Shower for Baby Avery!

Mom and I had a baby shower for my niece, Avery, at mom's house! We invited family and friends to come and meet the new baby!! What a great turn-out! (and a packed house!) It was a really great time to see everyone and catch up on each other's lives... and who could forget all the awesome presents that Avery received?!! Thanks, everyone!!

EHS Basketball Team goes to State!

Just a quick "shout out" to the Varsity EHS basketball team!! Great job at State! They came home with 4th place!! Their toughest game was against Ames... (they have Harrison Barnes, who is ranked #1 in the country!) Everyone played their best and should be very proud of themselves!! The Varsity team has really paved the way and set the standards for the upcoming EHS varsity players -- what a great bunch of guys!! Thanks for the great year!!

I'm Back... We'll See How Long!!

I know it has been a while since I last posted on here... I apologize to any family and friends who look here for our "updates"!! It has been a busy few months with my sister having a baby, the kids finishing up their basketball seasons, and work has been busy, also!! I have been working most of my days off and weekends, too! I will do my best to try to post anything you might have missed while I've been away! Bear with me!!

My Daughter is Japanese

My daughter is Japanese... at least for today! We had a Girl Scout International Event today, where eleven Girl Scout troops got together and each one represented a country. Brianna's troop was representing Japan, so each of them dressed in costume... Brianna chose to wear a "kimono" robe, complete with white socks, sandals and chopsticks in her hair!! To read more about our event, click on our Troop 273 Blog link located in the right corner under the listing "Our Friends' Blogs"!

Seizure #4...

Last night, Brianna had seizure #4. This one was just like all the others... happened just after she fell asleep and lasted about a minute or less. We have a call in to the doctor, but not sure what he is going to do about it other than note it in her chart. While I have been home today, I was doing some research on the internet about the BRE (Benign Rolandic Epilepsy) and I did see that the most common cause of a seizure is not taking the meds as prescribed. Brianna has been taking her medicine for the most part, but we have missed a dose here and there, especially lately. It is really easy to forget with our hectic schedules... we are going to have to be more vigilant about making sure she takes her doses every day. One of the other factors that was listed was hormone fluctuations... makes me wonder if Brianna might be reaching puberty and this is causing it?? More questions to ask the doctor... stay tuned.

The 10th Birthday Bash

Brianna decided she wanted to have a swimming party at the new hotel in town... Stoney Creek Inn. The reason for this is because they have a pool where you can swim inside, or swim through a "waterfall" and end up swimming outside!! How cool is that in February??!

She invited seven friends to come swimming and have cake, then four of them spent the night with us in the suite we had booked for the night. Luckily I have a friend that is a manager at this hotel! I was able to get a really good discount on our suite!!! (Thanks, Sami!!) The suite Brianna picked out for her party consisted of a king-size bed (for me!), an oversized bunkbed, and even the couch in the living room area folded out to a bed! Brianna and her friends went swimming all night long! When it came close to the pool's closing time, we went back to our room and watched movies til they fell asleep. They were all asleep before midnight, believe it or not!! The swimming for hours on end must have wore them out!! The next morning, we dressed and went down to one of the hotel's banquet rooms for breakfast, then back up to the room and the girls decorated tote bags that Brianna had given them while I packed everything up to get ready to check out. Everyone was very well behaved and it was a great time! Just wish the weather would have cooperated so Grandma could have made it to the party and enjoyed the hotel with us!!! There's always "next time", Grandma!!

Brianna's Neuro Update

Brianna had her semi-annual visit to the neurologist. He scheduled her for her annual EEG to be done the following week. I really hate those... only because we have to stay awake most of the night! Do you know how hard it is to keep a child up and awake for the night, especially with no caffeine?! I always dread this test when it comes time... why can't they do the EEG test at night? They are able to do sleep studies on people at night... even Brianna lucks out because she gets to fall asleep during the test, while I sit in the chair and watch the computer screen with the technician, though I have NO IDEA what any of the "blips" and arcs and peaks mean! The technician did show me how they can tell if the patients eyes are opened or closed, or if they are moving around, but when I ask about "abnormal" peaks, she tells me that the doctor or radiologist would have to read that... go figure...

After twenty minutes of sleeping, two minutes of blowing a pinwheel around, sitting through a series of flashing strobe lights, etc., Brianna had her "second wind" once she was all done. I, on the other hand, was ready for a nap!! We ran a few errands after her testing, then I took her out for lunch. She wanted to go back to school, but I made her come home and lay down with me - she was sound asleep and snoring before I was!!

Back to the doctor visit... when I asked more questions about Benign Rolandic Epilepsy (this is what the doctor has diagnosed Brianna as having) the doctor told me that "syndrome" represents about 15% of all epilepsies in children. The seizures begin at an average age of about 6 to 8 years and in almost all cases, the seizures and symptoms disappear by the age of 15. He also went on to say that Brianna's "intelligence" is not affected by the seizures.

Benign rolandic epilepsy (BRE) is named after the rolandic area of the brain, which controls movement in the affected part of the face. That name refers to certain patterns ("spikes") seen on the EEG which help to identify the syndrome. Other tests, such as the neurologic examination and MRI, are normal. A typical attack involves twitching, numbness, or tingling of the child's face or tongue (a partial seizure), which often interferes with speech and may cause drooling. These seizures last no more than 2 minutes and the child remains fully conscious. Sometimes children (like Brianna) also may have "tonic-clonic" seizures, usually during sleep. The seizures are usually infrequent, but they may occur in widely spaced clusters. The doctor keeps reassuring me that these seizures do not hurt Brianna and she should grow out of them... here's to keeping our fingers crossed...

Musketeers Hockey

Brianna and I attended a Musketeer Hockey event with our Girl Scout troop on Saturday, January 16th. This was an all day event, consisting of ice skating, getting a tour of the Tyson Events Center, and door prizes! We also got to stay and have supper (hot dog and pop) and watch the Musketeers play against the Indiana Ice... and meet some of players after the game for pictures and autographs!!! Both of us had an awesome time! Check out some pics!
